Dangerwish (a poem)

There are dangers in the dark

I wish I was out there

Confident companionship and

Not a moment to spare

To right and left and side by side

Silver sword in steady hand

To work in living shadows

One of a rag-tag band

Cold air in my lungs

Every sense awake

The clever quick and strong

What tales we shall make

And if I miss my swing

And if I slip and fall

And if I am in pain

You will heed my call

And if you loose your way

And if your back’s against the wall

And if you can’t hold on

I won’t let you fall

Steaming breath beneath the moon

Trust in each command

We know not the end

But these steps we understand

Dancing at the edge

of more than we can bear

Yet by grace we reach the light of day

And take our breakfast there

There’s tragedy, I know

In such an escapade

Yet my heart will go on longing

To be just a bit afraid

To rise to the challenge

To take on the quest

To forge a togetherness

That triumphs every test

I’m tired of the troubles

that dwell within my head

For a spell I think I’d like

To fight monsters instead
