First Awake (a poem)

The world is mine at break of dawn

Before all the lights are on

House is still, birds a-caper

Breeze is cool upon my paper

I watch the light creep ‘cross the floor

Stage set for the coming play

Touch upon the quiet tea cups

A prologue to the chapter of today

Soon voices will fill the scene like a rush of desert rain

But in the interim, my ears needn’t strain

For I’m sole audience to the morning’s monologue

And as the curtain rises you’ll hear my soul applaud
