The Astronomy of Acquaintance (a poem)

We are planets

Or stars maybe

Spinning through a vastness beyond what we know

Dancing in and out of each other orbit

In the halls and the courtyard and by the coffee counter

Mingling laughter and brushing shoulders and exchanging words

We twirl on our own

Drifting

Cut free

But ever drawn close again

By the pull of a spiritual gravity

How lovely it is to let one’s feet carry you forward

And discover a familiar face along the way

Fellow wanderers finding home in each others company

Because there’s no reason, really, for you to sit next to me

There’s no reason, really, for me to continue along your way

But for the quiet delight that visits when we stay
